'I will follow the queen’s rules in the queen’s castle': Entitled sister-in-law crashes on couch and overstays her welcome, refusing to follow house rules until she's confronted

Sharing space with your in-laws might be inevitable, but there are always boundaries that you can draw. For instance, when you're visiting a chatty family member, remember that you can indulge them until your social battery has expired, at which point you are well within your right to politely excuse yourself. Frankly, if you don't do that and you allow the conversation to prolong itself, you will only end up feeling resentful and exhausted. 

Another crucial boundary to set with in-laws relates to mutually shared spaces. Regardless of how old you are, if you are a guest in someone else's home, it is up to you to follow house rules and respect your host. It doesn't matter where you fall in relation to your host on the imagined family hierarchy. All that matters is that you respect one another. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done.

For this author, she tried to establish decent house rules, none of which were over the top, for her entitled sister-in-law to follow. This, of course, backfired fairly quickly in spite of the author's efforts. We believe that a greater use of the author's time would have been to firmly set a deadline for her departure, after which she'll hopefully never crash at their place again.

  • It's worth noting just how simple these house rules were. Cleaning after yourself should be a given, and yet in-laws like this lady seem to feel like they deserve to be above basic human decency in shared spaces. Still, after the author not only gave the sister-in-law a piece of her mind but also actively inconvenienced her to prove a point, the sister-in-law finally backed down and realized that she was messing with someone who was not going to be manipulated.
